J. S. Bach
Complete Cello Suites

8:30pm | St. Stephen's Cathedral

The cycle of Bach's Cello Suites is considered one of the most profound works of classical music. Its great appeal lies in its complexity. With minimal means - four strings, five fingers - Bach created a masterpiece. "In the wonderful sound space of St. Stephen's Cathedral, the notes of my cello rise up the Gothic columns and spread out over the audience like a colorful sound-web," says an enthusiastic Christoph Stradner, First Solo Cellist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.

On two concert evenings, the exceptional musician plays all six suites centrally in the nave, so that one can experience every grip and bow stroke up close. The violoncello of Bach's contemporary Antonio Stradivari from 1680 gives this cycle an authentic sound experience.

Bach's Cycle About Life

Each of the six solo suites recalls a period of our lives. In the first concert, beginning lightly with nature and childhood (G major), the journey leads through the dichotomy of puberty (D minor) to turbulent youth (C major). The second concert evening continues with adulthood (E-flat major) and, after coming to terms with mortality (C minor), finds its way to a supernatural eternity (D major).

A Life Dedicated to the Cello

The Viennese Christoph Stradner completed his studies with Wolfgang Herzer at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with excellent results. A scholarship from the Alban Berg Foundation in Vienna enabled him to study in London with William Pleeth. Christoph Stradner ist the first solo cellist of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra since 2004, as well as cellist of the Altenberg Trio Vienna. From 2006 to 2019 was a professor at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. As a soloist, Stradner has performed with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Tonkünstlerorchester Niederösterreich, among others. Performances at festivals such as the Carinthian Summer, the Bregenz Festival or the Vienna Music Summer as well as an active chamber music activity complete his profile. Christoph Stradner is the recipient of numerous awards.
